The instructions for making a USB installer from the 6 Gb installer you downloaded from Apple are at the link above.

 

Please note these instructions ASSUME you use the name “ElCapInstaller” 

If you formatted your USB drive and left the name at, say, “UNTITLED”, this won’t work. 

You’ll have to change the name of the installer in the Terminal command.
